Outcomes of the PMC meeting in Joensuu

The Programme Monitoring Committee met on 15th-16th December in Joensuu, Finland.
The PMC congratulated the Developing Scots Pine project, the first NPP 2007-2013 project to have been successfully closed. The project developed 5 products, exceeding their target of 4. The PMC thanked the project and acknowledges their strong outcomes, which demonstrates that transnational cooperation can result in tangible products and services, which is a specific feature of the NPP.
Scots Pine Decision Support Tool available online

The Scots pine project has launched an online Decision Support Tool to support the establishment and management of Scots pine forests in the Northern Periphery area of Scotland, with a focus on the impact of site factors and management alternatives on the volume and quality characteristics of timber produced. The DSS is applicable to both the establishment of new woodlands and the management of existing stands and is designed to be used in conjunction with the series of silvicultural guidance notes prepared as part of this project.
Scots pine guidance notes

The project has published a series of guidance notes that seek to add value to the future Scots pine resource by encouraging growers to invest in economically effective and ecologically sustainable forest management leading to the production of high quality timber. The guidance notes are also supported by case studies from partner countries .
Design with Pine

The Scots pine project recently held a 'Design with Pine' architectural competition at Glenmore Lodge in the Cairngorms National Park. It was led by staff from North Karelia University of Applied Sciences, Finland and was attended by students from Scotland, Finland and Sweden. The competition theme was facilities for visitors to the National Park made from Scots pine timber. Design entries included childrens' playground facilities, an auditorium and simple cabins for walkers made from prefabricated timber components.
Loch Fleet Bird Hide

The Scots pine project has commissioned a bird hide at Loch Fleet, Sutherland to showcase the use of homegrown Scots pine timber. It is situated on the edge of Balblair Woods and is a great place to watch wading birds on the shores of Loch Fleet NNR. The hide was designed and built by Neil Sutherland Architects LLP - watch a time lapse film of the hide being built

The Finnish Forest Research Institute is publishing an in-depth technical review of Scots pine, detailing its properties and suitability to different uses. The key findings of the review have been surmised and published as web pages online.
Glulam study tour to Norway

In April architects and specialists in timber engineering took part in a 3 day study tour to Trondheim organised by the Norwegian forest and Landscape Institute to learn about the use of engineered timber products in construction. There was a strong focus on the manufacture and use of laminated timber products including cross laminated timber in residential and commercial buildings, and stress laminated timber in bridges.
